What is Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a ketocarotenoid with a natural red pigmentation. It is found in both microalgae and yeast, with the most common source of algae being Haematococcus Pluvialis and yeast being Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous.

This carotenoid is found in seafood including salmon, lobster, shrimp, crab, crawfish, krill and trout since algae and yeast, which contain Astaxanthin, is their food source.

What are the health benefits of Astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant, and since the only way our cells can fight free radicals is through antioxidants, it can have several benefits.

Free Radicals

Free radicals are molecules with one or more unpaired electrons. When our body’s number of free radicals outweighs antioxidants, oxidative stress occurs and leads to unstable cells.

Oxidative stress is caused by several factors listed here, and if not addressed over time, can lead to chronic inflammation. Different from the inflammation that occurs after a cut or a sprain, chronic inflammation throughout the body can cause a long list of issues and diseases including cancer, neurological conditions, autoimmune disorders, and more

Antioxidants Vs. Free Radicals

Antioxidants are the only thing that can be used to combat free radicals. They neutralize free radicals by providing them with the extra electron they need. Since they’re constantly used to neutralize free radicals, it is important to have your diet rich in antioxidants.

Foods rich in antioxidants include vegetables such as artichokes, broccoli, spinach and cabbage, and fruits including cranberries, red currants, figs, cherries and mango. Neutralizing free radicals with antioxidants has shown to have a positive impact on the development of serious diseases.1
